Pet Online Shop Case Study

As a mainland-based pet business owner, I wanted to start my online store for the global customers. Being new to e-commerce, I knew I needed guidance to go from an idea to a fully operational online business.

Should I use a third-party e-commerce platform like Amazon, a brand site powered by SaaS, or a self-hosted brand shop?

E-commerce platforms like Amazon allow me to sell products quickly without much setup, giving me access to a large audience, but they charge fees on sales. SaaS platforms like Shopify provide a simple way for me to create my online store using easy tools, though they come with monthly fees. A self-hosted site, like Woocommerce shop, gives me full control over my brand and design, but it requires more technical skills and means I’m responsible for security. Each option has its pros and cons, and I need to consider what works best for my needs and budget.

What are the costs involved with each option?

When I looked at the costs for each option, I noticed some differences. For e-commerce platforms like Amazon, I face selling fees that take a percentage of each sale, plus possible listing fees. With SaaS platforms like Shopify, there’s a monthly subscription fee, and I might also incur higher transaction fees unless I use their advanced plan of payment system. For a self-hosted site like Woocommerce shop, I need to pay for web hosting and a domain name each year, along with costs for themes and plugins. Each choice has its own costs, and I have to think about what fits my budget and needs best.

How do these paths compare in terms of benefits and challenges?

When I considered the benefits and challenges of each option, I found some clear differences. With e-commerce platforms like Amazon, the benefit is that I can reach a large audience quickly, but the challenge is the selling fees that can cut into my profits. Additionally, I don’t really own my online store because it could be suspended by the platform due to changing policies. For SaaS platforms like Shopify, it’s easy to set up my store with user-friendly tools, but I face monthly fees and transaction costs that can add up, and I still don’t have complete ownership. With a self-hosted site like Woocommerce shop, the benefit is that I have full control over my brand and design, but the challenge is that I need some technical skills and I’m responsible for keeping the site secure. Each option has its good and bad sides, and I need to think about what works best for me.
